Sunday Open Thread

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Sunday Open Thread! This is a weekly place for open discussion about how things are going right now.

And if you don't have anything going on right now you'd care to talk about, talk about whatever you'd like!

Temping and whining for survivial

Frankly, I sat on my ass last year, writing fanfic and succumbing to anxiety (and low self-esteem). Push having come to shove, I've taken a call center 'temp-to-hire' position with a company that's supposed to be among the best to work for in the region. They give all the best bennies, promote heavily from within and every single person (but one) whom I've seen who actually works for them seems to love it. Here's the problem - it's not paying enough to live on at the moment but it could go to hire over the summer, and I can see that they support their people, but even if I'm hired the commute is brutal and I've never experienced such micro time management - to the minute - and add to that no internet access during the day, freaking rigidity about email, and no USB devices allowed - the only thing one is allowed to do when calls are slow, and they will be for the next 2 months (we're being saved for the busy season July-September) is read hard paper books - apparently they're going to ban Kindles and Nooks because they might be able to access the internet. Anyway, I can hold out, do the job very well and get hired, but I suspect I'd just be punishing myself for lazying around. I need time and space in my life to write. I need work I enjoy doing. I need to get on with making that happen.

My boss announced this week that I now have an 80% chance of my current job being renewed another year, which would be wonderful. Also, I got a first round interview request for a postdoc somewhere else. So things are looking up.
