Hello, everyone, and welcome to the first Open Thread! I figure this will be a weekly feature, a place for open discussion about how things are going right now.

And if you don't have anything going on right now you'd care to talk about, our alternate discussion topic is: What is the weirdest, or most out of place, thing you've ever seen on a job application?

I have nothing new going on; while two weeks ago, I found two jobs that fit me and applied for both of them, last week I didn't find any. :( It's really frustrating to go "oooh, this looks interesting", and then get caught in the teeth of the requirements.

The weirdest thing I've ever seen on a job application was having a to write a poem about my last job. This was about six years ago now and I don't even remember what the job I was applying for, but I strongly remember that "write a poem in under a hundred words about your last job". It was not a job that involved poetry. I'm still o.O o.O o.O about that one. You wonder sometimes about why they put certain roadblocks up, and then there's "write a poem".

This isn't a job application, but a phone interview I had this fall that involved this weird, out of place, and verbally abusive gem:

Recruiter: How would you rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 in attention to detail?

Me: Well, I'm pretty much a 10 in that. I'm a very detail-oriented person.

Recruiter: Oh, so you're OCD. So how do you then go about meeting deadlines when juggling multiple tasks . . .



Just as most of us are conditioned, I'm generally slow at responding to verbal abuse, so I didn't. I do have my mental health issues, but OCD is not personally one of mine, but if it was --just fuck you mister. Oy.

Yeah, I had wished I had a recording of it, hoping it is illegal as disability hate speech and discirminatory language, too. I should look it up. A number of recruiters have been real hork splats. I can only hope they find themselves on the other side of the phone calls reeeeeeal soon.

They all seem to be standardized forms these days. Which has its good points, because lawyers have looked at them and they don't ask about family and parental plans, but kinda boring.

I see this all over the place, which is "independent contractor position with possibility of hire". Which is illegal in the US under federal law. *sigh*

I've been having to go through job shops these days, they are the employer of record and do the payroll, but there's no security of any kind. My brother always called them pimps.
